Prior to the 1980s, Bali's rice fields covered 125,000 hectares. This has been reduced to 85,000 hectares due to development in the Denpasar region. Development for the tourism industry has also played a major role in this reduction. The Balinese government has made some token efforts to discourage the reassignment of farming land for other purposes, but these efforts have not had a meaningful effect. Bali
